ABOUT THE SERIES

An award-winning journalist, leading photographers and a renowned designer have teamed up with two of South Africa’s leading technology management experts to reveal the evolution of country’s exciting innovations, at every level from the grassroots to high technology. Drawing on the annual Technology Top 100 awards, and published by the Engineering Association (SAVI) supported by sponsors in government and the private sector, the series comprises two illustrated volumes on past and present achievements, plus a booklet on how innovation occurs in go-ahead organisations.

The dynamism of democratic South Africa has its roots in the traditions of the past, and embraces the information technologies of the global era. Golden jewellery was crafted and traded from Mapungubwe on the Limpopo a millennium ago. The first African in space and the first pilot to fly a private spacecraft beyond Earth’s atmosphere were both South Africans. The country boasts 10 Nobel Prize winners, four of them in scientific fields. The Edge books reveal how the silent revolution in technology occurred in a country that has triumphantly surmounted racial divisions to create innovation from diversity.
